We caught up with Gil following the release of his ‘Morning Cleanser’ EP on Low Recordings…

Hey Gil! Thanks for chatting to Music Is 4 Lovers. How’s your 2024 going so far?

This year has been flying by fast. Super exciting times for me and my musical projects. Having full time obligations, running and operating a vinyl pressing plant with constant deadlines; it’s been crucial for me to make time for my own music projects and planned releases.

You’re latest EP, ‘Morning Cleanser’, is out now on Low Recordings! What can you tell us about this one?

Morning cleanser is a very special project highlighting my musical styles while exploring instrumentally in all the genres I bring together in my compositions. Linking up with Low Recordings has been the perfect relationship for my style, they release great quality tunes and I’m excited about the team up.

We’d love if you could give our readers an insight into your Capsule Labs label

Capsule Labs has always been an iconic LA Brand for my pressing plant and mastering studio since 1999. When it was time to self release a few projects myself, it was done under the home label ‘Capsule Labs Music Group’. Although being an occasional self-release label for my personal projects, there are some really great releases planned for this summer

A first-class exploration of house and jazz on your latest EP, which artists do you draw inspiration from?

Moodymann, Herbert, Deep Purple, FKJ, J Dilla, Bonobo, Darius, Tigran Hamasyan, icube, Paco DeLucia, Return to Forever.

Give us your top 3 LA artists right now and why.

Dave aju, Robert Glasper, Corey Wells; some LA producers that always stay true to quality.

We’d love to know more about your background and experience working within LA’s dance scene

I’m a Los Angeles native, growing up here in the 80’s and 90’s/ I grew up playing instruments; my father was in a gigging band and the musicians were always over at our house critiquing interludes on my dads vinyl collection. I played drums and violin growing up, later on I picked up piano, keys, Vibraphones, percussions, congas and bass. I started DJing in 94, by 1997, I had a pretty nice record collection and was sharing it with the local scene. It was an amazing time to be part of the LA underground. After years of working in recording studios as a sound engineer and technician, I started mastering, lacquer cutting and pressing vinyl records in 1999 with the launch of my plant, Capsule Labs. I also released music on labels including Om records, Drop Music, Deeper Shades, So Sound Recordings.

It’s been great to chat to you! With summer around the corner, do you have anything planned that you can share with us?

I’ve been writing a lot of new content thats a little chunky, edgy and melodic; some really raw and organic stuff. I’m excited to share some of these new sounds! Next on the release table is the ‘Get To Know Ya – Remix Project’, It’s A triple pack 3 LP set that includes about 17 remixes from different artists and producers of my track ‘Get To Know Ya’. The triple pack will include a digital download card and we have some elegant packaging planned for this release; can’t wait for this one to hit the streets…
