Los Angeles is an ever growing city with an even faster growing scene harboring some of the world’s best music and musicians. As summer approaches, one of Los Angeles’ most respected musical philanthropists, Eduardo Castillo, is giving us all the greatest gift we could ever hope for, the gift of music. Known for his wonderful music productions on labels such as Crosstown Rebels and his eclectic DJ sets, this downtown LA bar owner and party thrower is once again helping give back to the community.

For the summer, Eduardo teamed up with the city of Los Angeles and The Grand Park, and will be hosting FREE concerts in the park the last Sunday of each month. In addition, Pattern Bar will be serving up fine refreshments in the midst of the show. We feel this is just what LA needs and will be a perfect addition to our growing music scene and establish Los Angeles even more as a epicenter for music. After just announcing a stellar summer line up, we can’t wait to see these parties unfold and see the community come together in the heart of this glorious city.

A wonderful reflection from the curator of this great event, Eduardo Castillo:

Since I moved to Los Angeles, almost 9 years ago, I always dreamt of the day when I would share amazing music with a trusting and open minded music community, in an outdoor setting while enjoying our perfect weather. That day has come. Next Sunday May 26^th,our friends at Grand Park will allow us all to revel on the stunning grounds of the park as we watch the sun move above us and set to the sounds of music that will inspire us and fill us with optimism and joy. I’d like to instill a very important thought in everyone that is as excited as I am about spending our summer together.

The Grand Park Sunday Sessions are unfolding thanks to the trust of the City Of Los Angeles, the County of Los Angeles and our dear friends at Grand Park, without them, this would not have been remotely possible. Numerous minds and decision makers were involved in allowing these wonderful sessions to take place and with this comes immense responsibility. A responsibility I am proud to take on. I can’t do it alone however. I need your help! I need us all to prove that this trust is taken seriously and with pride and respect. Our dance music, some like to call it EDM, has a tarnished reputation, with your help, I’d like to change that.

My vision of each day together at the park, involves families dancing on the grass, fans shaking their favorite artists’ hands, watching artists thanking their fans with a hug, children laughing, couples hugging and kissing, inspiration running through and through, and all of us seeing each day turn in to night with great hope for the month ahead, until the next session, where we’ll meet and do it all over again. Think of this has your opportunity to do what’s right for us all. Think of how empowering it is to know you have a say (by your actions) in how your city relates to what you love to enjoy.

We must ALL cease this!

We need to enter the park with utmost respect for our communal home and utmost respect for a community that clearly longs for such a day without the sense of consumption overpowering it.

This is why the Sunday Sessions are FREE. This is what Grand Park is all about. I am truly honored to have this incredible opportunity in a city I love so very much. I feel truly privileged to have such amazing artists share their talents with all of you. They were carefully chosen because everyone of them understands what they will be a part of, and how important this is for our city. So, friends, let’s have an unforgettable summer, filled with nothing but optimism and love for our community. Let’s prove to each other how important this is to us all.

Silky, Barber & Climbers – Frozen EP (OFF Recordings)

OFF Recordings are very proud to welcome a very exciting new collaboration team including one of the fastest growing acts on the scene in the last couple of years. Mexican wonder-team Climbers, already praised for massive releases on the likes of Get Physical, Culprit and Electronique, team up with London’s own Silky (My Favourite Robot, Nurvous) and Barber (Faceless Recs) to put together a solid EP surely destined to have room in everyone’s set this summer. “Frozen” shows their signature sound in full capacity… Deep disco groove with a bouncy phat bass line and sing along male vocals and lots of feeling in the synth and pad work, truly a musical delight. On remix duty come Moda Black’s Jaymo & Andy George, who turn “Frozen” in a more housed, dubbed peak hour track, keeping the deepness but pushing up the tempo with swirling pads and a killer swing groove. “Mindset” is the second track, with another solid discofied groove & mind bending vocal work but with a darker techy approach, fat lead synths and a driving bass line make this one quite a trip. A great summer package indeed!

Upstroke – Dream Girl (MEXA Records)

[Release] Keeping in tandem with the arrival of the lighter spring season, MEXA keeps it funky with this latest release from Upstroke. When electronic music started to sweep through Russia, Upstroke listened to a lot of music from The Prodigy and West coast hip-hop. When he started to produce a few years ago, it only seemed natural for him to take his early influences and create a self-described “combination of fat funky bass, hip-hop rhythms with a touch of 80′s disco”.

Fat Funky Bass & 80s disco synths are the order of the day with this groovy 3 track EP from Upstroke. The release kicks off with ‘Dream Girl’ a self-proclaimed dreamy track loaded with a disco vibe all around. The first two tracks ‘Dream Girl’ & ‘I See You’ are loaded with spacey synths and vocoder vocals on top of a funky bassline to create a truly cosmic disco experience. While ‘California Luv’ still maintains much of the 80s feel of the first two, there is much more of the West coast hip-hop feel to this last track by switching up the vocals and adding some of that smooth hip-hop rhythm to the heavy disco synths.

Overall, it is definitely a different and lighter sound for MEXA. Showcasing the range from their traditional deep, dark, and heavy to this lighter nu disco groovy springtime sound.

In addition to the musical talent bursting the seams of Detroit this Memorial Day weekend, there are multiple outlying pre, after and (of course) after-after parties put on by some of the best and brightest promoters and labels from around the globe. The DEMF 2013 after parties are going to be killer.

For the earlybirds arriving on Friday night, there are some rad pre-parties to get you warmed up for the weekend. Music is 4 Lover’s very own Booty Boss Jon Dadon will be playing with British talent Burnski and Detroit duo Golf Clap at Grasshopper Underground starting at 9:00pm. (Info and tickets HERE.)

Chicago’s favorite underground spot Smart Bar collaborates with TV Lounge for a pre-party BBQ, featuring guest vinyl connoisseur Cassy, residents The Black Madonna, Orchard Lounge, Nate Manic and more from 10:00pm til 4:00am. (Info and tickets HERE.)

Martin Buttrich & Loco Dice’s label Desolat will bring their German-inspired tech house to Detroit’s Bleu with Desolatimus, featuring Buttrich, Guti and Dru Ruiz. (Info and tickets HERE.) You can also catch an intimate 4 hour set from local legend Carl Craig at Motor City Wine, which is sure to be a special experience and benefits the Detroit Institute of Arts. After a full first day of festivities, quality beats will remain in full supply throughout Motor City, keeping you on your feet through the night. Nightsneak brings the Dirtybird Players to The Fillmore with epic back to back sets from the whole crew. Claude, Justin Martin, J. Phlip, Justin Jay, Kill Frenzy and more are sure to keep the energy level high and the booties droppin low. (Tickets and info HERE.) DC-10 born promoters Circo Loco are bringing the island spirit to TV Lounge, paying homage to the late American multi-instrumentalist Arthur Russel with selections from Carl Craig, Visionquest ‘gents Ryan Crosson & Lee Curtis, D’Julz, Culprit trio Droog, Skream and many more for a night of creative vision. Day 2, the nightlife is completely stacked. The Life & Death team are bringing the heat to St. Andrew’s Hall with live performances from Clockwork and The / Das, and impeccable sets from Tale of Us, James Holden, Maceo Plex, DJ Tennis, Magda and Thugfucker– definitely going be a wild one! Over at Leland City Club, Flying Circus hits Detroit in collaboration with Spybar Chicago, featuring No. 19 duo Art Department, live sets from Benoit & Sergio and Lee Curtiss, the BLOND:ISH ladies and more. At Bleu, straight off his Boiler Room Detroit appearance–for the lucky VIP ticket holders on Sunday–Blackflag Recordings showcases Stacey Pullen on the decks along with Nicole Moudaber, Nathan Barato and Mike Brown until 4:00am.

The final day of any festival is bittersweet, but Visionquest’s daytime Need I Say More party in the backyard of The Old Miami brightens the mood every year. If you make it to any additional party this weekend, this should probably be it. Although artists are kept on the hush, there is always an all-star line up and sensational vibes to start off Day 3 right. Still ready to party when the lights go down on Hart Plaza? Sure to be a family affair, City Club and Red Bull Academy invite Seth Troxler and friends to play into the morning, letting the DEMF heads soak up every last moment of their tremendous musical journey.

Making it through this long weekend and catching all the best parties is all about endurance, so make sure to stay hydrated, eat well and, most importantly, dance your ass off!
