[New Mix] Freaktionpod no.five — Bela Brandes

[New Mix] Coming at you from a far away land, from Israeli partyline and label, Freaktion, comes the fifth installment of their exclusive Freaktionpod mixed by Bela Brandes of Hamburg, Germany.  Delve right into the sounds that make our party animal brothers and sisters tick and move and shake–the same sounds that make us get up and dance, even thousands of miles away–and I ask you, can you feel the friction?!  This mix has a groove so deep and sexy that you might get a little hot and bothered, so keep a nice glass of ice water handy. You disco dancers will only wish it had lasted longer.

[Label Profile] petFood

[Label Profile] petFood was founded by Miami heart-throbs Jay-You and Lazaro Casanova in a Cuban Cafe, somewhere in West Miami. Word on the street has it that they both made a pact to leave their previous jobs as Cuban spies to focus on their musical passions. While undercover as a DJ and producer in Miami, Lazaro Casanova slowly began to lose touch with his secret-agent roots, eventually assuming the new identity he had created in music. Jay-You’s story is still classified, but we can say that the origin of the name petFood is rumored to be the last mission the two ex-spies worked on together before their full-time move to music. One thing is for certain, however, no one will ever really know the truth.

Since the inception of the label, these two boss hogs have made a significant impact on the house music world, introducing many new artists to our ears from all over the world. The label has really become an international brand over the years, gaining popularity in markets from the US to the UK and beyond. Before we give away too much information or start too many rumors, lets get into our exclusive interview with Miami’s, petFood.

Interview with petFood:

Who are we speaking with here?

Jay-You

Who is involved with the label?

Lazaro (Casanova) and I run the day-to-day operations of the label. We both do a bit of everything.

When did you decide to start the label? What was the inspiration/inciting moment where you realized that you wanted to start the label?

The label started back in 2008 while we were eating at a Cuban café in Miami. Laz was in the middle of changing his sound and needed an outlet for his new stuff. I suggested he start his own label to release his own stuff and I’d help him with the day-to-day operations. I also wanted to A&R a label, so we figured we’d give it a go.

MI4L: of course we all know the real story ;)

Is this your first label or have you had a go at this before?

This is a first for both of us. Continue reading

[Label Profile] Neim Records

[Label Profile] The Neim imprint has been responsible for many of the hot releases in 2011, putting out records from the likes of the WiLDKATS & Tboy, The Midnight Perverts (Label Manager), Pinto (A&R and Graphic Design), Miguel Puente, Alexis Raphael, Jay Haze, Balcazar (A&R and Mastering) and more. As you can see, the Neim label is a tight knit family as many of their artists do more for the label than just make music. Intrigued by their releases and of course, by the strong musical movement coming from Mexico right now, we decided to ask the guys at Neim to take us on a tour of their label in this exclusive interview. Keep your eyes on this label, they are certainly one to watch in 2012.

Interview with Neim

Who are we speaking with here?

Eduardo Pinto & Romeo Ugalde

Who is involved with the label?

Neim is basically formed by:
Romeo Ugalde (Label Manager, The Midnight Perverts)
Eduardo Pinto (A&R, Graphic Designer)
Marco Balcazar  (A&R, Mastering)
Omar Oliveros (A&R)
Mexin (Webmaster, Producer)

When did you decide to start Neim Records? What was the inspiration/inciting moment where you realized that you wanted to start the label?

Well, Omar & Romeo where living in Miami a few years back, we always had the curiosity of running a label. Romeo used to produce with Balcazar & Pinto as Sjunkes back home in Guadalajara, so, when Romeo moved back to Guadalajara we started to develop along with Ramon Gonzales from Bar Americas what at first was a collective. We think everyone started the same way, we got tired of sending tracks to labels with no or very late response & decided to start our own to show our music. After that, we decided to run Neim as a label.

[Label Profile] Love Not Money

[Label Profile] Love Not Money. How perfect a name for a record label. It seems more and more record labels are spurting up with the sole purpose of putting out music for the love of it. If you own a label, then you would know it’s a labor of love with its profits and losses, usually yielding just enough to stay afloat.

Love Not Money hails from the vibrant city of Leeds, known to many DJ’s & producers worldwide as the clubbing capital of the UK and a major breeding ground of musical talent. Run by artist and DJ, Luke Pompey, the label delivers a unique underground music experience firmly dedicated to the support and development of the finest cutting edge electronic dance music. According to their bio, they thrive on creative, like-minded people armed with initiative and something new to say. They are not just about music, but also are a collective of artists, musicians, illustrators & designers all with a view to keeping things fresh.

When first coming across the label, my attention was caught by a track called “Wishes” by Scott Harrack on their first EP.

Ever since then, they have proven that they are a label to follow with a unique message to deliver through their music. You will find that they truly represent a diverse music base and strive to promote music of several sounds and styles. Read below to see what label boss Luke Pompey has to say about the label in our exclusive interview with Love Not Money.

Interview with Love Not Money:

Who are we speaking with here?

Hi I’m Luke Pompey, I’m a Leeds based DJ/Producer that has recently set up a homegrown House music label ‘Love Not Money Records’. I’m resident for one of the UK’s most successful club nights Filth at The Warehouse here in Leeds. As a DJ I’ve been lucky enough to play some of the worlds best clubs playing Cream, Amnesia & Privilege in Ibiza at a very early stage in my career. I’ve done so much in my 6 years as a full time DJ and I’m thankful for everything and every bit of help I’ve received along the way. Met some amazing people and had some crazy times!

[Label Profile] Interview with Culprit

[Label Profile] Hailing from the great City of Angels, Culprit has established itself as an imprint of worldwide recognition and respect in just a few short years. Famed for their Summer Culprit Sessions parties at the Standard Hotel rooftop in Downtown LA, the consistent caliber of bookings and incomparable ability to set the perfect vibe has translated itself directly to their label demeanor. Hand selecting the finest talent of both established and up-and-coming artists combined with a strong influence over the direction of their niche market has gained them unwavering support. Culprit is doing something right and we all know it.

Well, who is Culprit? What are they about? We had the pleasure of interviewing Culprit’s head-and-tail honcho, Andrei Osyka and asked him to tell us more about the start of the label and what’s really going on behind the scenes.

Interview:

Who is involved with the label?  The Droog trio are all involved, but the management and operations beast of burden lies on my semi-muscular shoulders.

When did you decide to start Culprit? What was the inspiration/inciting moment where you realized that you wanted to start the label?

Myself and our collective’s un-official fourth member at the time, Matt Zamias, were the main driving forces behind it at inception. In fact, Matt was the first to think that creating a label would be a good idea. At first it seemed a typically over-the-top and premature idea. Over time, maturity of the concept stopped being an issue but the sheer arrogance of the thought we had something  truly significant to contribute as a label remained. Which is a good thing.  The arrogance, that is.

There wasn’t any one moment, really, but a collection of exceptionally hazy now Droog party- and after-party inspired units of time, where our hubris led us to believe that the collective vibe we were attempting to create was worth encapsulating via a label. In short, we don’t really remember why we started it, but sure glad we did.
