[Review / Forthcoming Release] Lee M Kelsall – Something EP (May 28, Mexa Records)

[Review / Forthcoming Release]

Review

Release Date: May 28 2012
Label: Mexa Records
Catalog: MEXA002

Track List:

1. Something (Original Mix)
2. Something (Volta Bureau Remix)
3. Something (Cubiq’s ‘Nick Of Time Remix’)

From DJ to promotions manager to producer, Lee M Kelsall is an experienced player in the UK clubbing game. Kelsall’s eclectic taste is cultivated from a wide variety of influences that include old school jams, house, and garage. His first production, a nu-disco release called On The Road remixed by Matt Fear, was signed to Hot Waves within the hour of hitting Lee Foss’s e-mail inbox. Since then, Kelsall has put together a stunning new single for Mexa Records’ second release, showcasing his roots in disco and funk with his EP, Something featuring Thabo.

The title track of the release begins with a piano chord progression reminiscent of Gladys Knight & The Pips’ “Taste of Bitter Love,” which then develops into a soulful vocal by Thabo accompanied by a broken beat feel and some pad work. This disco-tinged gem echoes the early 80s with a modern twist of upbeat percussion and a vocal that provides an acute flexibility for any remix opportunity.

For the first remix, Cubiq found a middle ground between Volta Bureau’s version and Kelsall’s original. Cubiq’s ‘Nick of Time’ remix fully utilizes the vocal line and hook from the original while completely changing the feel of the track by syncopating funk-bass and synth stabs.

Second on remix duty is Volta Bureau. This trio removes the vocal focus from the heart of the track, leaving the hook for the last few minutes of his variation. Volta Bureau chooses to stray from the original chord progression and introduces a heavy bassline as the track’s focus, ringing true to the original’s 80s influence. Like MEXA001, this second release offers a well-balanced selection of music with three different, yet complementary tracks. Viva la Disco, Viva La Funk, Viva La Soul!

[Forthcoming Release] Amirali – In Time LP (Crosstown Rebels)

[Forthcoming Release] Amirali … WOW. Beautiful. Simply sublimely entrancingly beautiful. He has stolen my heart with his subtle combination of deep but downbeat energy, mesmerizing vocals, dark but beautifully light vibes, and euphoric sounds. It is evident in his alluring amalgamation of styles the range of what he notes as his greatest influence of his father’s record collection which opened his eyes to classical, jazz, blues, and rock’n'roll. From ‘The Harmonious Sound’ which is wholly angelic to the darker ‘Hear Me’ – every song on this LP set to release on Mi4L favorite Crosstown Rebels is enticing and spellbinding. I can’t even pick a favorite. They all have me hypnotized. This.is.ART! True talent and straight quality. Words cannot do this LP justice, you have to listen and experience the essence for yourself …

[News] Heidi Launches Jackathon Label

[News] The infamous badass blonde babe Heidi is set to launch her new label The Jackathon next week on May 14th under the parent label Get Physical Music. The Jackathon first began in 2009 as a party series Heidi would take with her around the world, evolved to a mix CD series in 2011, and has now in 2012 come to fruition to manifest its essence and energy in what will inevitably be one of the most bangin labels. Heidi is a woman after my own heart, a true lover with an open mind.

In an interview with Resident Advisor she shares that her inspiration behind The Jackathon was to bring more of a family vibe to the table.“I’m really open to anything as I like so many different styles of music…Many people don’t know but the word ‘jacking’ is a dance move, a feeling to move your body in a certain way, pertaining to the music that was coming out in Chicago at a certain moment in dance music history. For me it definitely has to be about the artist and if I connect with them on a personal level. That makes such a difference to me…All of my parties have been real moments for me because the people who agree to come and play really get stuck in and enjoy the night to the fullest…It’s about connecting the dots between different genres of music. It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside after we do these parties and everyone always leaves with a sweaty smile on their face and usually a massive hangover. The tell tale signs of good night.”*

“I asked 16 artists that I admire to make an exclusive track for me as a little gift to the people who have supported what I do – some known, some unknown. It was also a gift to me, as I had no idea what these artists were going to make me. The result was more than I could have wished for. All of the tracks are totally different from each other and super fresh, which is what I wanted and keeps with the theme of the night. Diversity and change are always welcome.” Heidi on The Jackathon 2011. (soundcloud.comHeidi Presents Jackathon Jams will get started with a mini-compilation, Da Remixes, featuring reworks of the exclusive tracks from the Jackathon mix by Deniz Kurtel, Eats Everything, and Richy Ahmed.

[Forthcoming Release] Dusky – Flo Jam EP (Dogmatik)

[Forthcoming Release]  If you are not aware of the powerhouse that is Dusky yet, get ready!!!  These London based artists may be better known for their progressive house and classic house sound but they have recently decided to join the deep and dark side.  Their forthcoming release Flo Jam EP on Dogmatik Records, due out in late May, is an amazing four track EP great for any mood or setting.

The title track ‘Flo Jam’ is just that…It’s the jam!  With an ominous melody and hard hitting bass line this one is sure to be on many top 10 lists.  ‘Every Day’ lightens it up a bit and has a nice soulful feel to it before going into a jacking rhythm.  The track ‘Mystics’ fits the name, with a dreamy, mystical feel continuing to lighten the middle of the EP. The final song, ‘Numerical,’ has a heavy rolling bass along with wicked delays and a sinister kick.  All these tracks are incredible and I can’t wait to grab this one!

Also, just recently Dusky did it again with their remix of the Hot Chip track ‘Night And Day.’ This is just another example of the talent that this duo has and the song was made an Essential Contender for Radio 1 by Pete Tong.

[Forthcoming Release] Spring Offensive – Worry Fill My Heart (Cubiq’s ‘P45′ Remix)

[Forthcoming Release] I’ve said it once, and this release only cements my affirmation … with a name like ‘lovenotmoney‘ it’s pretty much inevitable that I am going to love everything that comes from this record label. I mean, they clearly get it. LOVE above all else. Cubiq‘s disco spin on Spring Offensive‘s original takes the somewhat somber track from ‘Worry Fill My Heart’ to love fill my heart. The ethereal lifts and drawn out vocals are airy and alluring, delicate and dazzling. Simply celestial.
