[The Scoop] WMC Wrap Up

[The Scoop] Now that WMC 2012 has ended, we can all go back to living our lives without a guilt-inducing, alarm-sounding level of envy directed at those who were able to experience the sanctity of Miami during dance music’s equivalent of the High Holidays. Indeed, there is so much to look forward to now: great new releases for summer, rooftop parties, Movement Detroit, and the summer festival season! Here are some treats from WMC to get you disco-dancers hyped for the future!

[News] Detroit Electronic Music Festival (DEMF) – Movement 2012 Phase I

DEMF p. 1

Detroit is the birthplace of techno. Unless you live under a rock you know that or you’ve probably heard somebody say that. Somebody at a party probably said it like this, “dude, techno isn’t from Europe, it’s from Detroit.” That guy was right. I was still sitting in the sandbox when the first World Party happened in Detroit. That was in ’94. Now I’m much older. I’ve left the sandbox and traded in my digging sticks for mouse clicks. I was also into Lego’s, now I’m into techno. As a music blogger, I like to think that writing about music consummates the years of formidable education, the countless shows, the four different student loans (that I’m still paying off), all the molly we ate and my double minor in writing quite nicely. My awesome parents put me through an awesome college. Now I’m using what I learned about writing in college to talk about music that inspires me. Electronic music is a lifestyle, and currently at the forefront of that lifestyle is DEMF. If you want to know more about DEMF Wikipedia it. There’s a lot of information, more than I’m going to go into.

Since the ’94 World Party, Carl Craig, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson have each come and gone. Neither of them were able to sustain control of the festival which has since it’s official launch in 2000 undergone multiple venue, name changes and taglines. Call it Movement, call it “DEMF,” call it Detroit Electronic Music Festival (it was even called ‘Fuse-In Detroit’ in 05 when it was being run by Kevin Saunderson) – this is the best value, progressive, electronic music festival in the U.S. Like couture is to fashion that’s what DEMF is to dance music. Musicis4lovers and I will be keeping things up to date over the next few months as they develop. Here’s phase one of the lineup:

[Festival] The Parklife Weekender – Manchester, UK – June 9 & 10, 2012

[Festival] Without the music there’d be no party – without the party there’d be no music. It’s a beautiful full-circle relationship, and the flowers that blossom from it is what makes life worth living – for us anyway. Knowing how much hard work and dedication that goes into throwing one single party with one single headliner, the inkling thought of producing a two-day festival is arduous.

The Parklife Weekender in Manchester is another festival we must give props to. A two-day festival that takes place in the gorgeous setting of Platt Fields during the summer month of June. This year’s line-up is full of MI4L favorites: Art Department, Claude Von Stroke, Clive Henry, Com Truise, Dam Funk, Damian Lazarus, Danny Daze, De La Soul, Eats Everything, Heidi, Julio Bashmore, Maya Jane Coles, Miguel Campbell, Soul Clap, Subb-an, Tensnake, and Wolf + Lamb.

We applaude the promoters of this festival for the diligence and devotion necessary to produce such an amazing and intrinsic event. Big ups!

[News] Ultra Music Festival 2012 Lineup Announced – Includes “up-and-coming DJs”

[News] I received an email the other day with a press release from the Ultra Music Festival announcing their Phase I lineup. As the curious music lover I am, I checked out what the ever popular festival was offering this year. To my surprise, I found a few black sheep among the mainstream electronic music acts, appearing on day three of the festival. Reading through the press release, I found Jamie Jones and Seth Troxler described as the “up-and-coming” DJs of the festival in the same paragraph with announcements for David Guetta, Armin Van Buuren and Tiesto. I suppose a congratulations is in order for the “up-and-coming” DJs that made the festival this year and perhaps a lesson on the definition of “up-and-coming” is in order for Ultra’s press writers.

All in all, it’s apparent to me that if any of you are attending Ultra, it is Sunday, March 25th (Day 3) that is the day to peep the festival. Recommendations for Day 3 are Damian Lazarus, Art Department, Seth Troxler and Jamie Jones. There are some techno and tech-house acts that are certainly worthwhile as well.

[Festival] BPM Festival 2012 MI4L Picks – Playa Del Carmen, Mexico (December 30th – January 8th)

[Festival] This one’s coming up quick… so if you aren’t already in the loop, get movin’, or you can save up for next year… Here’s the scoop: For ten days and long nights, Playa Del Carmen will be the backdrop for the BPM Festival, set along the quintessentially white sand beaches of the Mayan Riviera, located on the Caribbean Coast of Mexico; this is SXSW and WMC wrapped into one select week and three days of high end, dance music. When it comes to house music, BPM has, having now grown into its 5th year and counting, more or less cemented itself as a staple music event – 2011 saw over 25,000 attendees and over 120 deejays and live acts, performing day and night… Expect this year to be nothing less, and nothing less than a blowout. The 2011-2012 lineup includes some of my personal favorites of this last year and a slew of seminal, influential label showcases that will be presenting a foray of house, techno, and everything else in between. You can buy individual event tickets or buy a single wristband for 3, 7 or 10 days… For tickets and more see here.

In lieu of any post apocalyptic, 2012 rumors, the festivities will invariably be running from December 30th-January 8th… That’s 10 days of seamlessly, continuous music, and that’s a lot to decipher. With three to six parties a day, plan to take a lot of vitamin C with you; moreover, give or take a few coin tosses, as any discerning festival goer knows, you need to make some choices (because you can’t go to everything, it’s just too much).

I’ve outlined at least a party for each day. I’m recommending some more than others with a “do not miss” note.

**Friday, December 30th: Air London presents A Night in the Air: Simon Baker / Kate Simko / Nitin / Bioniq BUY TICKET

I’m a huge Simon Baker fan – Not everyone might know this man… this year will be his 3rd year turning heads at the BPM festival. This is a do not miss.

**Saturday, December 31st: ***NYE 2012*** Flying Circus presents Audiofly / Steve Bug / Nicolas Jaar Live / Benoit & Sergio Live  BUY TICKET

If you didn’t know what to do for NYE, now you do. This is certainly the party to go to including a rare Live set from Nicolas Jaar. Everyone please thank Audiofly for putting together this fabulous lineup. Round of Applause and Happy New Year!
