Interview with Mat.Joe

How did you first get introduced to underground dance music?
Mat: It started really early…I went to a lot of underground raves with my skate homies…really love the good vibes!
Joe: Electronic music has always been on my radar as I listened to lots of “Mega Hits CDs” as a kid. Every now and then, these collections included some dope tracks by e.g. Cassius or Paul Johnson. Slowly but surely, the music got me and I started listening to remixes of these tracks, too. A lot of the remixers are/were also quite active in the underground scene and since then I am hooked!

What is the most challenging part of becoming a full-time producer and touring artist?
M: You have to learn to produce your music everywhere around the world. That also means to not get lost too often! Haha!

What has been the most exciting turning point of your career so far?
J: Working hand in hand with a management and getting a US visa!

Where is your home base? If someone were visiting there for the first time, what clubs and/or parties and/or restaurants would they want to check out?
M: We both are originally from Hannover, it’s in the middle of Germany. Since more than 6 years now, we moved to Berlin. So what should we say about Berlin…it’s just an amazing city with a lot of good clubs, nice bars etc. And you can party here mostly all the time.

What advice would you give to an aspiring producer?
J: Make sure your working place gives you a good feeling, be it the expensive synth or just the palm tree next to your desk. Try to do the exact opposite and allow imperfection sometimes. Oh yeah and go the insecure path for sure.

What’s on the horizon for Mat.Joe in 2017?
M: Oh we just released on Repopulate Mars and a brand new EP on Mother Recordings. Also some new remixes are in the pipeline. Looking forward to the festival season and some tours like Asia, South America and the United States.

Do you have any hobbies outside of music?
J: Good food, interior design, movies.

What are some touristy things you do while playing in a foreign city?
M: It depends on the timing, but we always try to check the cities and cultures. We’re also big beach lovers. Haha!

Dream gig…
J: A lonesome island, a perfect soundsystem, cool people dancing in the sun!

Name one of your go-to tracks…
M: Midland – Final Credits

Tell us about your mix…
M: It’s a selection of good new and also classic jams. It shows a trip into our world and our sound: CrispyUrbanHouse.

Drink of choice…
J: Depends… Moscow Mule, Vodka Soda, Gin & Tonic.

CHEERS!
