Interview with Anton Tumas

How did you get into dance music and DJing? Do you remember a specific moment of inspiration?
If I had to recall a specific set or a moment, it would have to be the beginning of Danny Tenaglia’s “Be Yourself” WMC-closing 10 hour set, circa 2005. The way he layered those house records together was simply mind blowing. The feeling generated by this music was something very different to anything I have experienced before.

Describe the scene in LA in 5 words or less. What parties and/or clubs and/or restaurants would we want to check out?
Endless variety and bright future…

As far as events to check out, I’m an outdoor guy, so Disco Dive parties are always super fun at the Standard Rooftop with top bookings. Doc always keeps the vibes proper with Sublevel, and I’ve never gone to a DEEP party without smiling ear to ear. There’s so many pockets of goodness in LA these days though, it’s mind boggling.

Do you have any residencies?
I’m a resident at Monday Social. It’s really fun to play with the edgier bookings Freddy Be does there. For example, this Monday it’s me and Maher Daniel, who has put out one of my biggest tracks ever, and is a true staple of our scene!

As far as Subtract, we’ve been keeping pretty busy doing shows when we get artists we are excited about, and doing sound for other quality outfits in LA that really value sonic excellence. Some exciting collaborations are on the horizon, as well as a two unique releases on our label.

Which do you prefer – 115 or 125?
115. There’s just a lot more space in the music, and much room for experimentation.

What gig do you dream about?
On a beach under the moonlight, surrounded by jungle, fire, friends and sand, as we dance into the sunrise in tribal communion.

What cool things do you have planned the remainder of 2016 and beyond?
Our next show is in Long Beach on November 6 with Sebastian Mullaert LIVE, who has put out some of the most hypnotic and moving music we’ve ever heard. Taking a much needed break after that, so I can clear my head, and recharge all sources of inspiration. There’s quite a bit bubbling under the surface as well, so I’m just taking the time to develop these ideas and plot out the course ahead.

Tell us about your mix…
This mix is heavily inspired by California’s deserts, and countless nights and sunrises under the full moon, Spacious, trippy and thought-provoking.

Drink of choice…
Gulden Draak Triple Ale, a whole lotta Belgian yumminess.

CHEERS!
