Barcelona-based DJ/producer and I Used To Sleep At Night label owner, Lee Webster, delivers an excellent set of house music for our 146th Lovecast episode.

Lee has released a gang of cream of the crop jams in recent years on some of the underground’s hottest labels; such as Hot Waves; Audiojack’s fine label, Gruuv; and Swedish label, Local Talk Records.

His tunes are groovy and his demeanor unconventional, which is why we like Lee Webster’s steeze so much. Check out Lee’s podcast and learn more about him in the interview below.

Interview with Lee Webster

How did you first get introduced to underground dance music? What is the most challenging part of becoming a full-time producer?
Yo firstly thanks for asking me to be a part of this series my man!   I guess my first introduction to underground dance music would have been the UK garage and US house scene in England.  We used to pick up the tape packs from record shops, usually an all night rave split over eight tapes and we would pass them around. I was heavily in to drum and bass too, I remember the Sunday Roast tapes with Andy C and Stevie Hyper D just blowing me away, such moody dark shit. It really shaped me.

What has been the most exciting turning point of your career so far?
Getting to travel is amazing.  Getting emails from people like Jamie Jones is amazing.  Having people tell you they really like something you did is amazing.  I really appreciate love in any shape or form.

Where is your home base? If someone were visiting there for the first time, what clubs and/or parties and/or restaurants would they want to check out?
I’m based in Barcelona.  If you come here your best bet is to just walk around and discover things.  As far as restaurants and bars go, I would definitely recommend checking out my good friend Michelle’s place- Coconut Club, its next to Pacha.  The food there is amazing as is the atmosphere.  I play there occasionally which is not something I do a lot of in Barcelona and its always fun.  Also my best friend’s record shop Nut Records has the best selection of Techno and Deep House.

What advice would you give to an aspiring producer?
Don’t listen to advice.  I’ve opened a paradox there.

What’s on the horizon for Lee Webster in 2016 and beyond?
I’m saving up for a sailing boat and then I’m going to disappear for a couple of years with my dog.

Do you have any hobbies outside of music?
I enjoy thinking about time travel.  I also like going on Tinder dates with mentally ill strangers.  My dog is my best thing, she’s such a sweetheart. Cocaine.  Winding people up. Humus.

What are some touristy things you do while playing in a foreign city?
Lay in my hotel room pleasuring myself and laying in my own filth.

Dream gig…
Boat party in Berlin.  I’m assuming as its my dream I can make there be a sea and make it be hot aswell..  Then an after in some weirdo’s house.

Name one of your go-to tracks…
Isola – “Gregorythme” – It doesn’t blow up the dance floor.  Its more like a time out. Like you can drop it peak time and everyone just spaces out and it gives you time to breathe.

Tell us about your mix…
Recorded it live at home.  My mixing heavily depends on my mood.  This is the kind of thing I would play in a dark club I think.

Drink of choice…
Hendricks Gin and Tonic.  Slice of cucumber.  Usually ask the barmaid to spit in it.
