Swiss-born, Berlin-based veteran DJ, producer, and label owner, David Keno, comes in hot off his Moonshine EP on Mother Recordings.

Classically trained musician as an adolescent, David discovered electronic music early on–leading him down a path as a professional dance music wizard.

David Keno has released a seemingly endless amount of music on such prominent labels as Noir; Katermukke; Dirtybird; his own label, Keno Records; and most recently, Mother Recordings, for his close pal Nhan Solo.

We’ve been seeing more and more of David Keno over the years and we’re delighted to be able to feature him on our Lovecast series. Check out this peak-time mixture of jams he has so graciously supplied us with, and learn a little more about David in the interview below.

Interview with David Keno

How did you first get introduced to underground dance music? What inspired you to turn an obsession into a profession?

My big brother took me to my first string of parties with electronic music, which was pretty inspiring. Later when growing up near Frankfurt in Germany, I got infected with the techno virus going to clubs like Stammheim, Palazzo or U60 in the early 2000’s.

My transition to a professional artist was very slow. I didn’t really plan it. Step-by-step it got more and more successful and I could work less in my regular job and focus more on music. I am very happy that I can make a living from my passion today.

What has been the most exciting turning point of your career so far?

When I stopped working and turned completely to music things really improved. I should have done this earlier but it’s better late than never I guess.

What city do you call home? How does where you live influence your music? If we were visiting your hometown, what clubs and/or parties would we want to check out? What about restaurants?

I live in Berlin since 2006. In the beginning the influence was bigger because I was going out much more than today. Back then I wanted to be like dj x or producer y. Today I still have my heroes of course but I know better where I belong.

Party-wise I almost only go on parties where I play myself but when I really want to go out, Sisyphos or Kater Holzig never disappointed me.

The older you get, food gets more important: not a real restaurant but the food at Burrito Baby in Neukölln is awesome.  If you love burgers you have to try BBI or Lilyburgers. Both are also located in Neukölln. You guessed it, that’s where I live!

What advice would you give to an aspiring producer trying to make their mark on the world? How much of it is being at the right place at the right time?

Stay focused. Just do what you enjoy the most. If you are running after a trend you will be following something all the time. The trend will be gone and so will you. If you are true to yourself and keep doing it for you, the success will come to you at one point.

What’s on the horizon for David Keno in 2016 and beyond?

This year I try to push myself even more to become a better producer and dj. I still have to learn a lot and I feel very hungry to get better. I hope I will never lose this drive, otherwise I would have to stop I guess.

Dream gig…

At sunrise or sunset at the beach with a big happy crowd. It doesn’t get better than this.

Dream collab…

I would love to spend a month with Rick Rubin and maybe Chet Faker and just go crazy and experiment with recording and producing.

Hobbies outside of music…

Besides music I try to spend as much time with my family as possible. In the rare moments when I have free time on my own I like to play video games sometimes.

What touristy activities do you like doing when visiting a foreign city?

On a day off in a foreign city I like to do the full on tourist thing. Hop on the bus and join a tour. Check Lonely Planet and visit the interesting spots.

The better option of course is when I have someone who lives there to show me the city.

Name one track that has been lighting up dance floors for you…

At the moment it is definitely my track Moonshine on Mother Recordings. I have been playing it for months now and it never disappointed. The feedback was great everywhere and I am very happy that it is finally released and doing very well already.

Tell us about your mix…

This mix is a set that I would play if I only had one hour in a primetime slot in a packed club. I didn’t want to make an easy listening mix for the living room. This is one I would love to hear at a party or at least when I’m in a party mood ;)

Drink of choice…

That depends. When I am deejaying I like Vodka Ginger Ale at the moment. But Thomas Henry please, no Schweppes.
