Jade is an artist who has had the rare opportunity to be mentored by some of her biggest musical inspirations – a product of her environment in every sense, she has already found her place amongst some of today’s most influential electronic music producers.

Although her love of music started at a young age, it was acts like Kruder & Dorfmeister, Thievery Corporation and Massive Attack that really encouraged her to explore the world of sound and melody. Her introduction to DJing came back in 2008 when a friend and mentor, DJ/producer Jonny White (Art Department) , invited her to play at a party for his now infamous label, no.19. Jonny White, having spotted Jade’s musical potential, took her under his wing, guiding her through her exploration of and experimentation with electronic music from the very beginning.

Jade’s potential, combined with hard work and a desire to evolve her talent, led her out from behind the decks and into the studio; there, she created a sound that was sexy, organic and all her own. Deep, dark, fat bass lines accompanied by solid hi hat patterns became part of a signature sound that she finally shared with the world in 2012 when she released her first record “Try Again” – Jade (Canada) on none other than electronic label, no.19.

This has marked the beginning of what is sure to be a very exciting career for the Toronto native who continues to be motivated by music and inspired by producers who push the limits with innovative sounds.

1.  Where are you from and how has your upbringing shaped you into the artist you are today?

I was originally born in Berlin and moved around at a very young age. By the age on 10 I had already lived in 3 different countries and spoke 4 languages. So it was very hard to move around and learn new cultures, although I believe I am extremely social and open minded because of it . In my mind to be an artist you need to be able to accept and be extremely open to life in order to be inspired and motivated to create whatever it is you are working on .

2.  Can you tell us a little about the city you are living in now, the scene, and how it effects you as an artists?
I am currently living in Barcelona . It’s a big change from the life I had back in Toronto , the music scene here is absolutely incredible . Every weekend you get the option to see at least 3 of your favourite artists. It’s also extremely refreshing to be back in Europe  and to be surrounded by so many talented musicians who make me want to work harder .

3.  When did music production become a serious part of your life?
I got really serious about making music when I made the decision to sign up to a certified ableton course at Dubspot in 2011. After the one year program ended I was ready to create my own sound and began to really understand and enjoy the art of production .

4.  What is your preferred method of music production?
I am very comfortable with using Ableton as my main method of production. Although I am very eager to get into learning different programs such as logic and pro-tools.
5.  We are in love with your newest track, ‘Second Guess.’  Can you tell us a little about this track and your inspiration for it?

I never really have a plan of what i’m going to make when I get into the studio . Whatever happens happens really . I tend to use a lot of piano keys and sounds in my music and this is just one of many tracks that I am very happy with .

6.  Can you tell us a little about working with your mentor, Jonny White, and being a part of the No.19 crew, and how it has helped you grow as an artist?

It’s been a long journey since I first became part of No.19 in 2009. I have grown and learned a tremendous amount from Jonny. He has always been by my side giving me notes on how to better my music and I can’t be more thankful for that. No.19 has definitely opened a lot of doors for me and I am very proud and happy to be part of this family.
7.  What are some of your favorite producers at the moment?

Avatism is one of my favorite artist at the moment. His music really speaks to me .  I can listen to his Adamant album over and over again and never get sick of it.

8.  Being a newer artist, what do you find is the hardest part about breaking into the scene?
In this day and age there are so many talented people who are doing the exact same thing as you , the hardest part for me is to just keep calm and have patience . I am always so eager to get my music out but i’ve learned that time is virtue and everything will happen when it happens.
9.  What advice would you have for aspiring producers?

Be an innovator not a follower.

10.  Can you tell us a little about your upcoming projects and what we can expect from Jade in the future?
I am mainly focusing on my own production and have a few exciting releases coming out this summer .

11.  Can you tell a little bit about this mix?

It has a pretty deep and groovy vibe to it. Enjoy 🙂
